Super Bowl 59 Futures Trash or Treasure: These Lions Are Hungry

Some teams are separating themselves from the pretender pack, while others have their fans wondering if they’ve got what it takes for playoff run. We look at the shortest odds from Caesars to win the title next February and whether they are Treasure (worth a bet) or Trash (not).

Detroit Lions (+350), Treasure: Jared Goff is having one of the greatest QB seasons in history. He’s completing 73 percent of his passes. He’s averaging two TD passes a game, and his rating is over 112. Detroit (9-1) has topped 50 points twice, and 40 points twice. They’ve won with blowouts, and they’ve won with comebacks. Will there be any bumps in the road?

Kansas City Chiefs (+460), Treasure: Yes, KC (9-1) got handled at Buffalo on Sunday. Then again, the Chiefs have lost four straight regular season games to the Bills. It’s been a different story in the playoffs. Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid and the Chiefs are still NFL kings — until they’re not.

Buffalo Bills (+580), Treasure: Josh Allen and the Bills (9-2) got some revenge for last season’s playoff loss to the Chiefs, but they really need to get that No. 1 AFC seed. You just know playing in Kansas City is going to get in the head of Allen and head coach Sean McDermott. They’ll need to make up one more game on the Chiefs to get the 1.

Philadelphia Eagles (+700), Treasure: Saquon Barkley is 176 yards away from the best rushing yardage season of his career, and he’s got seven games to do it. Few players in the NFL have had more impact on this team than the former Giant. The Eagles (8-2) are ranked No. 1 in defensive yards allowed per game and are fifth in offensive yards gained per game. The Eagles and Lions are by the top two teams in the NFC.

Baltimore Ravens (+850), Trash: Lamar Jackson is now 1-4 against the Ravens’ arch-rival Steelers, and Baltimore (7-4) doesn’t seem so dominant now. They’ve lost two of their past four games and had to rally to beat the Bengals by 1. The schedule doesn’t get easier — at the Chargers on Monday night and home for the Eagles over the next two weeks.

Pittsburgh Steelers (+1700), Treasure: Russell Wilson is 4-0 as a starter after taking over for Justin Fields. The defense is ranked in the top 10 and RB Najee Harris is averaging about 70 yards per game. It’s hard to imagine Pittsburgh (8-2) emerging from the AFC in the postseason, but never underestimate Wilson and head coach Mike Tomlin.

San Francisco 49ers (+2200), Trash: Brock Purdy has a sore throwing shoulder, edge Nick Bosa is probably out for at least a week with oblique injuries, George Kittle is trying to heal up and Christian McCaffrey doesn’t look much like his 2023 OPOY self. Plus, SF (5-5) just blew a third fourth-quarter lead against another NFC West team. With games at Green Bay and Buffalo in the next two weeks, the buzzards are hovering over the Niners and Kyle Shanahan.

Houston Texans (+2200), Trash: C.J. Stroud only has 12 TD passes against 7 INTs this season. Last year, that ratio was 24-5. Houston (7-4) is also 1-3 against teams with a winning record. It’s somewhat likely Houston will win the AFC South and host either the Chargers or Ravens. It’s hard to see Houston beating either of those teams at this point.

Los Angeles Chargers (+2200), Treasure: Jim Harbaugh’s team has won four straight games and are giving up 14.3 ppg. Justin Herbert is only throwing for 218.6 ypg, but he’s been picked only one time. RB J.K. Dobbins is 10th with 726 yards rushing. Are they for real? We will find out soon. LAC (7-3) hosts the Ravens on Monday night and then host the Chiefs the following Sunday night. Harbaugh was made for this.

Minnesota Vikings (+2200), Trash: The Vikes have bounced back from a 2-game skid by beating up on AFC South trash. QB Sam Darnold had a 5-5 TD-INT ratio in the 3-game win streak, and Minnesota (8-2) has a pretty smooth sailing until the final against Detroit. That game could decide the NFC North title and the No. 1 NFC playoff seed. We need to see more from Sam I Am before elevating this team to Treasure.

Green Bay Packers (+2500), Trash: The Pack are 0-2 against their NFC North rivals, the Lions and Vikings, and that means they are currently no better than at least third in the NFC. Let’s see how GB does in their revenge game against the 49ers on Sunday.

Washington Commanders (+4000), Trash: This is the most improved team from last season, and gave the Eagles, Steelers and Ravens tough tests before ultimately losing. Jayden Daniels has made this team relevant, but they still aren’t beating the best teams on their schedule.

Arizona Cardinals (+5000), Treasure: The Cards can seize hold of the NFC West this weekend — beat the Seahawks and hope the Eagles beat the Rams and Packers beat the 49ers. All very possible. With Kyler Murray at QB, the Cards can beat anyone on ‘any given Sunday.’
