Super Bowl 59 Futures Trash or Treasure: Only 2 Men Can Stop KC

OK, we’ve seen enough. The Kansas City Chiefs are still the best team in the AFC and has been ever since Patrick Mahomes became the starting quarterback in 2018. They have the best head coach and the best defensive coordinator. They are 15-1 and seem headed for a third straight Super Bowl win. But Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson do stand in the way.

With the playoffs just around the corner, we again take a look at the top futures odds to win Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans in February. We gauge which of these teams are ‘trash’ — not worth betting in — or ‘treasure’ — worth betting on.

Odds are from Caesars.

Chiefs +400, Treasure: KC and and Patrick Mahomes are 21-1 since Christmas Day 2024. They are playing their best football of the season. They will be the No. 1 seed throughout the playoffs. They appear headed toward the first three-peat in the Super Bowl era and the title of greatest dynasty ever.

Lions +420, Treasure: Jared Goff has 17 touchdown passes and only one interception over his past six games and is completing more than 70 percent of his passes. He’s having the best season of his career by far and Detroit is having the best season in franchise history since they won the NFL championship in 1957. But they must beat the Vikings in Week 18 to win the NFC North and keep the No. 1 seed.

Bills +475, Treasure: Buffalo doesn’t have a great defense, but Josh Allen’s passing and running brilliance might be enough to win at Kansas City — and it most likely will come to that for the AFC title. It looks like Allen will finish the regular season with less than 10 INTs for only the second time in his career, and picks is really the only thing that has ever stopped the big man.

Eagles +600, Treasure: QB Jalen Hurts has only thrown one INT since Sept. 22, but he’s also thrown only 15 TD passes. Philly has the defense, running game and QB efficiency to reach the Super Bowl, even if they have to win on the road. They also have the experience of facing Mahomes and the Chiefs in the big game.

Ravens +650, Treasure: Baltimore weathered its 3-3 stretch of mediocrity and have won three straight games by a combined score of 100-33. Lamar Jackson has 39 TD passes to 4 INTs and 852 yards rushing. Another typically great season. But just as Josh Allen has his mountain to climb (the Chiefs), Jackson has to overcome his playoff doldrums (a 2-3 career record).

Vikings +1100, Trash: We are only saying ‘trash’ now because they’ve got a ‘statement’ record but not a ‘statement’ win. They haven’t lost since before Halloween, but the only decent teams they’ve beaten during that stretch are the Falcons and Seahawks (yawn). Let’s re-assess after their next two games: home against the Packers and at the Lions to decide the No. 1 NFC seed and the NFC North title.

Packers +1300, Treasure: RB Josh Jacobs and QB Jordan Love — along with a solid offensive line — give Green Bay a great chance to go far in the playoffs, even if they have to win on the road. Love has 8 TD passes and zero INTs over his past five games.

Rams +3500, Treasure: It seems like ages since this team was 1-4 and left for dead. They are healthy, young, hungry and have won four straight games. They still have future Hall of Famer Matthew Stafford at QB and Sean McVay at head coach. McVay seems like an old veteran by now, but he’s actually only in his eighth season and has his eyes on a third Super Bowl appearance.

Texans +5000, Trash: C.J. Stroud looked weak against the Ravens, and Houston just looks like another AFC South team bloating their record against what has been probably the worst division collectively over the past decade.

Chargers +5000, Trash: It’s been a nice first season for Jim Harbaugh, but LAC is 3-5 against teams with winning records, and two of those came against rookie Bo Nix and the Broncos. People keep saying how great QB Justin Herbert is, but why is he only 39-38 in the regular season and 0-1 in the playoffs in five seasons? There are QBs who ‘look’ the part and QBs who ‘are’ the part. We are unsure of where Herbert fits there.

Steelers +5000, Trash: Pittsburgh has failed three straight tests against the top teams, with losses to the Eagles, Ravens and Chiefs. In those games, Russell Wilson threw only 3 TD passes total, passed for less than 200 yards per game and has only about 6 yards per attempt. He’s not what he once was.

Buccaneers +5500, Trash: Tampa is interesting. They’re only 8-7, but they’ve lost their past six games by a total of 32 points, and those close losses included games against the Ravens, Chiefs, Falcons and 49ers. Baker Mayfield has completed more than 70 percent of his passes and has 34 TD passes, but he’s also thrown 15 INTs.

Commanders +6000, Trash: Jayden Daniels gives Washington a puncher’s chance in the playoffs, but punchers don’t often beat four straight favorites.

Broncos +7000, Trash: Nice bounce-back season, Sean Payton. Nice rookie season, Bo Nix. But you’re not winning the title.

Falcons +9000, Trash: No way Michael Penix Jr. wins four straight playoff games.
