College Football Trashy Tailgate Week 5: The Hogs Are Hungry

Your humble prognosticator Brochacho Vargas thankfully went 4-1 last weekend after going 1-9 the previous two weekends. Let’s see if Senor Vargas can keep up his winning ways this weekend.

Arkansas (3-1) at No. 24 Texas A&M (3-1)

The Razorbacks have looked pretty good on the road this season. They had Oklahoma State on the ropes for most of the game, then last week won at Auburn. The Hogs covered the spread in both those games.

Arkansas ranks 15th against the run this season and could limit the Aggies’ running game. Hogs offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino is 4-0 in this series, having won three games at TAM’s head coach and as OC last season.

Go with Arkansas to win this one outright.

Washington State (4-0) vs. No. 25 Boise State (2-1)

I’m looking at the Apple Cup from two weeks ago (still hard to get used to the Apple Cup being played in September), but the Cougars came away with a squeaker victory in Seattle. That was big.

Cougs QB John Mateer is No. 3 in the country in total offense. He’s thrown for 1,102 yards and 11 touchdowns, and has 425 yards rushing (7.5 ypa) and five running TDs.

Look for the Cougars to win another tough road game, much less cover the +7 spread.

Buffalo (3-1) at Connecticut (2-2)

First-year coach Pete Lembo has done a good job with the Bulls so far, the only blemish being a blowout loss — albeit at No. 11 Missouri. Buffalo did win on the road last weekend with a 23-20 victory at Northern Illinois.

Buffalo linebacker Shaun Dolac, who ranked first in the FBS in solo tackles in 2022, now leads the FBS in total tackles (62), solo tackles (34), and tackles for loss (9.5).

I’m thinking Buffalo will at least cover.

No. 20 Oklahoma State (3-1) at No. 23 Kansas State (3-1)

The Cowboys were strong in the second half of their toughest games. They outscored Arkansas 32-10 to overcome a 21-7 halftime deficit three weeks ago. Last week, they outscored Utah 16-9 in the fourth quarter before losing by 3.

Go with OSU to hand KSU their second straight loss.

No. 15 Louisville (3-0) at No. 15 Notre Dame (3-1)

The Cardinals are averaging more than 500 yards per game and are 34th in the nation on third down conversions. It’s a little hard to see why L’Ville is ranked so highly — they’ve only beaten Austin Peay, Jacksonville State and Georgia Tech at home — but we will give the Cards a bit of leeway Saturday.

Expect Louisville to cover as the underdog.
