OK, let’s cut to the chase. Up to now, we’ve focused on the teams with shortest futures odds to win the Super Bowl in February. But now let’s look at the current NFL playoff picture, the top seven seeds from the AFC and NFC and their SB 59 futures odds. We will also indicate if they are worth a bet or not.
AFC Top 7
1. Kansas City Chiefs +500, Treasure: KC has won its past four games either with Harrison Butker field goals in the fourth quarter or with an overtime touchdown. Nine of the Chiefs’ 10 wins have been by one score. So … Patrick Mahomes & co. are not exactly dominating. But the Chargers, Texans, Steelers and Broncos await on their schedule. Let’s see if KC can keep that No. 1 seed. They probably don’t want to play in Buffalo in January.
2. Buffalo Bills +500, Treasure: Josh Allen is playing at his highest level ever (20 TDs, 5 INTs), the Bills have scored 30 or more points in the past six games and are riding a 7-game win streak. One possible red flag: the Bills lost twice on the road to the Ravens and Texans and are 0-3 on the road in the playoffs in the Allen Era (2018-2024). They need that 1 seed.
3. Pittsburgh Steelers +2200, Treasure: Russell Wilson threw for 414 yards and completed 29 passes to 10 different receivers to beat the Bengals on Sunday. He’s won five of six games since taking over for Justin Fields and he’s competing with Sam Darnold for Comeback Player of the Year.
4. Houston Texans +3500, Trash: Houston is only 1-3 against teams with winning records this season, and C.J. Stroud’s numbers has taken a big drop from last season. He has 15 TD passes compared with 9 INTs.
5. Los Angeles Chargers +3500, Trash: Jim Harbaugh has LAC in prime position for an AFC wild-card spot, but they can make an even bigger statement by winning at Kansas City on Sunday night. We’ll slot them as ‘treasure’ next week if they contend or even win. Right now, they’re just a heart-warming story.
6. Baltimore Ravens +1000, Treasure: Lamar Jackson & Co. have slipped up a bit of late, but they’re not losing by much. They might enter the playoffs as a wild card, but does anyone want to play them?
7. Denver Broncos +6000, Trash: Sean Payton has rebounded from the Russell Wilson debacle, with ex-Oregon rookie Bo Nix throwing 16 TD passes against 6 INTs. Still, they have no statement wins to their credit. But they can show they belong on the title bubble with games against the Chargers, Bengals and Chiefs coming up.
NFC Top 7
1. Detroit Lions +285, Treasure: Do you realize the 11-1 Lions have played only one time this season that wasn’t in a dome or retractable-roof stadium? Look, we aren’t disparaging Detroit for where they are playing. They have taken care of business every week, and if they keep the No. 1 seed, they can stay indoors throughout the playoffs and then play in the Superdome in the Super Bowl. They don’t want to play at Philly in January.
2. Philadelphia Eagles +475, Treasure: It was about this time last year that Philly began a free-fall, losing six of its last seven games amid finger-pointing about Nick Sirianni’s and Jalen Hurts’ lack of locker-room leadership. That’s all changed, and Philly ranks No. 4 in offense and No. 1 in defense. They are the only team that can derail the Detroit at this point.
3. Seattle Seahawks +6500, Trash: Geno Smith has the worst TD-INT ratio among starting QBs (13-12), but first-year coach Mike Macdonald has done a great job course-correcting Seattle after losing five of six games. If the Hawks can win the West, they will host a wild-card-round game (currently the Packers) and maybe steal a win. That’s likely where their run will end though, it’s hard to see Geno winning on the road in the playoffs.
4. Atlanta Falcons 12,500, Trash: After winning five of six to get to 6-3, the Falcons have struck a building and are back to baseline. Kirk Cousins has thrown six INTs during the team’s three-game losing streak and zero TDs. He hasn’t thrown a scoring pass since Nov. 3. Cousins has career earnings of nearly $300 million, to go with a hefty playoff record of 1-4. Wow, 300 millie for one playoff win. That is great ROI!
5. Minnesota Vikings +2000, Trash: The Vikes are a solid blend of reformed QB (Sam Darnold), great offseason RB pickup (Aaron Jones), superstar (Justin Jefferson), solid defense and excellent young coach (Kevin O’Connell). Their playoff seeding — and potential fortunes — will be determined in the final two regular-season games against the Packers (at home) and Lions (away).
6. Green Bay Packers +1400, Treasure: GB is strong at both lines, RB Josh Jacobs is getting close to 1,000 yards rushing and Jordan Love can beat you if he gets on a hot streak and protects the ball (which needs to improve). They have games against the Lions and Vikings coming up, so they could move up in the seedings. The likelihood is, they’ll have to win three straight road games to reach New Orleans.
7. Washington Commanders +8000, Trash: Rookie QB Jayden Daniels needs to beat the Eagles on Dec. 22 to give this team some confidence to tackle a grueling playoff road. Currently, Washington would start out in Philly in the wild-card round. Ouch. But an upset of the Eagles on Dec. 22 combined with a few other wins this month will be a big boost.
