We’re in December, the holiday lights are out in force and NFL teams are jockeying for playoff seeding and playoff berths. Some seem like title contenders, others look to simply be clawing their way into the Dance. Who’s worth betting on to win the Lombardi. We give you the ‘trash’ and the ‘treasure’ right here.
Teams shown in order of their current NFC and AFC playoff seeding.
AFC
1. Kansas City Chiefs (+450), Treasure: The Mahomes-Reid QB-coach tandem has won 15 straight one-score games, and their past four wins have been by fourth-quarter field goals. KC is either really lucky, really gritty or really bored. They are also headed toward the No. 1 seed and maybe a third straight title.
2. Buffalo Bills (+580), Trash: We’ve soured on the Bills, at least temporarily. With a chance at the No. 1 seed, the defense took a bison-sized dump at SoFi Stadium on Sunday, giving up an unforgivable 47 points to the Rams. And the Bills’ offense can’t just always be about Josh Allen. We will revisit after how the Bills do in Detroit this weekend.
3. Pittsburgh Steelers (+2200), Treasure: Quite honestly, Russell Wilson — with his probably Hall of Fame pedigree and Super Bowl experience — might be the one chance to put a speed bump in the Chiefs’ dynasty this postseason. Russell has cooked his way to six wins in seven starts and the Steeler defense is ranked 7th.
4. Houston Texans (+3500), Trash: Houston is 1-3 against teams with winning records, and they had better hope the AFC 5 seed is the Broncos and not the Ravens.
5. Baltimore Ravens (+1000), Trash: This team is a far cry from the squad that crushed some of the NFL’s best teams last season. They have only one statement win — a 35-10 crushing of the Bills, which suddenly doesn’t seem so great after the Rams dropped a 47-burger on Buffalo this past Sunday.
6. Los Angeles Chargers (+4000), Trash: Well, LAC blew it. Again. Jim Harbaugh’s team has fought hard but has lost four times to some of the AFC’s best: Chiefs (twice), Steelers and Ravens. LAC has no statement wins. Harbaugh has definitely put some life into this franchise, but a long playoff run in Year 1 doesn’t seem likely.
7. Denver Broncos (+4500), Trash: Sean Payton may have found his franchise QB in Bo Nix. Denver is beating the trash on their schedule, but they are 0-5 against teams with winning records this season. They should hope to get a 4-5 wild-card matchup against the Texans.
NFC
1. Detroit Lions (+270), Treasure: Jared Goff is making the big throws, Dan Campbell’s gambles keep working and Ben Johnson keeps dialing up offensive masterpieces. Can this team deal with the pressure of the massive expectations of a title-starved fan base and the NFL world?
2. Philadelphia Eagles (+500), Treasure: It kind of feels like the Eagles had their heartbreak (2022 vs Chiefs), their meltdown (2023) and now are even-keeled and playing just great Philly football. Jalen Hurts has thrown only one INT since 9/22 and the Eagles have won nine straight. Everyone’s talking about the Lions, but the Eagles might really be the NFC’s top dog.
3. Seattle Seahawks (+6000), Treasure: Geno Smith has the second-most passing yards in the league, but that 15-12 TD-INT ratio sticks in our craw. But it’s a great sign that Seattle is 5-1 on the road in their first season under new coach Mike Macdonald. He’s instilled a toughness in this team that he fostered at Baltimore.
4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+6000), Treasure: TB has won three straight after ending a four-game losing streak, and Baker Mayfield might be the second-best QB in the NFC. With his gutsy style of play and leadership, the Bucs could steal a playoff win, especially if they are hosting a wild-card game.
5. Minnesota Vikings (+1600), Treasure: In this ‘Year of the QB Resurrection,’ Sam Darnold might be the biggest story. He just blistered the Falcons for five TD passes, but Minnesota’s best strategy in the playoffs might be to lean on Aaron Jones (893 yards, 4.5 ypc) a bit more and keep Darnold conservative.
6. Green Bay Packers (+1800), Trash: The Packers are good — Jordan Love at QB, Josh Jacobs at RB, and good O- and D-lines. But Green Bay just doesn’t feel like a playoff dominator. They are 2-4 against teams with winning records and they are 0-3 against the Lions and Vikings.
7. Washington Commanders (+7500), Trash: We repeat — no rookie QB has ever won the Super Bowl, much less started one. We’re talking about you, Jayden Daniels. You’ve got great seasons ahead of you, but this won’t be one of them.
8. Los Angeles Rams (+6500), Treasure: Last on this list, but definitely not least. Matt Stafford is the second-best quarterback in the league and has won a Super Bowl. Sean McVay is one of the best coaches in the league. LAR also has two money receivers in Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp. This team is getting healthier and is roaring toward the playoffs. If you rewatch Rams-Lions from the 2023 playoffs, a few plays here and there and the Rams would have won that game.
