Week 8 is history, and so are the realistic chances of several NFL teams. But frankly, we don’t care about them. We only care about teams that have a chance in heck of taking home the Lombardi and if you should consider plunking down some dollars on them.
(For reference, a winning $100 bet on a team with +1000 odds would pay out $1000).
Kansas City Chiefs +405, Treasure: The Chiefs (7-0) haven’t lost since last Christmas. Patrick Mahomes is 96-25 (including playoffs) as a starting quarterback. And they just traded for DeAndre Hopkins to give Sir Patrick another weapon. Sigh.
Detroit Lions +635, Treasure: The Lions (6-1) scored 172 in their past four games, and they are doing it without star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson. The question is, are they peaking too early? We’ll see how good this team (and Jared Goff) really is — they’re on the road at Green Bay and then at Houston in the next two Sundays.
Baltimore Ravens +655, Treasure: The Ravens stumbled in Cleveland last weekend, thanks in large part to their butter-fingered receivers. Thus, they traded for Diontae Johnson. Despite having three losses, the Ravens are still among the top three teams in the AFC.
San Francisco 49ers +880, Treasure: The Niners (4-4) go into the bye after thrashing the Cowboys. They still haven’t beaten a good team this season, but 2023 OPOY Christian McCaffrey reportedly will return in Week 10.
Buffalo Bills +955, Treasure: The Bills look great against weak teams — they have four blowout wins against them. We’ll give them some leeway for now, but they had better defeat nemesis Kansas City home on Nov. 10.
Philadelphia Eagles +1335, Treasure: Jalen Hurts has put the team on his back and they’ve won three straight. If he can continue his progress, and with a roster as loaded as Philly, they can go far in the flawed NFC.
Houston Texans +1470, Trash: Despite their record (5-2), Houston just doesn’t feel strong enough to win the AFC. And now Stefon Diggs is out for the season. They’re lucky to play in one of the weakest divisions, but they’ve got the Lions, Ravens and Chiefs over the next two months. That’s when we will truly find out if they are real contenders.
Green Bay Packers +1470, Treasure: Jordan Love ranks only 17th in ESPN’s QBR, which is considered a more stringent and analytical rating than the usual passer rating. It would be ideal if he would stop throwing interceptions. The Pack have the Lions twice and the Niners over the next five weeks.
Minnesota Vikings +1920, Trash — Sam Darnold and the Vikings have come down to Earth after their 5-0 start, and losing to the Lions and Rams over the past two weeks calls into question how well their QB can win increasingly bigger games. Luckily for Minnesota, every game on their schedule is very winnable up until the final two: home for Packers and at Lions. The NFC North title and maybe a top seed could be decided then.
Washington Commanders +2500, Trash — How can we not elevate this team after their Hail Mary win over the Bears on Sunday? Washington is in solid contention for the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs at 6-2, and they will probably need to be at home throughout the playoffs to give rookie QB Jayden Daniels a home comfort security blanket. Remember — no rookie starting QB has ever won, much less reached, the Super Bowl.
Atlanta Falcons +2855, Trash — Sorry, Senor Vargas isn’t a huge fan of Kirk Cousins (1-4 playoffs) nor dome teams.
Pittsburgh Steelers +2920, Treasure — They’d have to get past the Ravens, Bills, Chiefs in the tough AFC playoffs, but why not put down a few bucks on the Steel Curtain? The defense is ranked ninth in yards per game allowed, and Russell Wilson is playing his best ball in years. Wilson is one of only four starting QBs who have a title ring.
Cincinnati Bengals +4175, Trash — One-hit wonders, and they didn’t get the big hit against the Rams in the Super Bowl. Why do Cincy teams never seem to get better over time? And yes, we are going back a couple of decades.
Los Angeles Chargers +4990, Treasure — They’ve given up a league-low 91 points and Justin Herbert has been turning some solid efforts at QB lately. Plus, how can you not have confidence in Jim Harbaugh?
Los Angeles Rams +6820, Treasure: They’ve got Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp back to catch passes from future Hall of Famer and Super Bowl champion Matt Stafford. Watch out.
