Is it really right to feed Brock Purdy to the Lions? For Detroit fans, the answer is a resounding “YES!” The Lions and 49ers have gone light years in different directions since SF rallied from a 17-point deficit to beat the Lions in the NFC Championship Game. Tonight, with the Lions trying to maintain a grasp on the No. 1 seed, they get a great chance to land the final knockout blow to a 49er team that resembles more of a Civil War battlefield hospital than an actual NFL team.
On paper, this game looks like a complete joke. The 49ers have lost five of their past six games and are out of playoff contention. They averaged 12 points in those five losses. They are forced to use former practice squad players for an offensive line that will be tasked for protect Purdy as he tries to keep showing that he should be getting a contract worth $60 million per year (uh, good luck with that my guy).
On the field, this game WILL be a complete joke. You think the Lions haven’t forgotten their heartbreak from January? You think they will go easy on a team that stopped them from their first Super Bowl?
Purdy will be running for his life on pass plays. The Lions rank 2nd in blitz rate at 33.1% and 4th in pressure rate at 25.9%. He only will really have tight end George Kittle to throw to.
On offense, Lions QB Jared Goff has 17 TD passes and only one interception over his past seven games. RB Jahmyr Gibbs has 1,156 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns, and Amon-Ra St. Brown leads Detroit in receiving with 1,126 yards and 11 TDs. WR Jameson Williams has an average catch of 18.9 yards and TE Sam LaPorta has 68 catches.
Yes, Massacre Night Football will be ugly. About the only thing that might distract the Lions for a minute will be their big NFC North showdown next weekend against the Minnesota Vikings. That will be for the division title and the No. 1 seed.
To be sure, that’s no small distraction, but the Lions first want and need to exorcise the demons of Jan. 28. 2024. Unfortunately for the 49ers, they are ready to be served up on a platter.
Take the Lions to cover at -3.5 points, take the under (50 points) and go with these props:
- Purdy under 256.5 yards passing
- Lions total touchdowns over 3.5
- Kittle over 68.5 yards receiving
- Gibbs over 0.5 touchdowns
- Gibbs over 87.5 yards rushing
