After Week 7, it’s time to take another look at NFL coaches that are starting to smell like that trash that didn’t get thrown out early enough.
Kyle Shanahan, 49ers
It’s official — Shanny is completely owned by Andy Reid and Steve Spagnuolo. The Chiefs head coach and defensive coordinator once again pantsed Shanahan and threw him into a Honey Bucket with no toilet paper on Sunday.
After the 49ers’ 28-18 defeat to the Chiefs on Sunday in their Super Bowl ‘rematch,’ Shanahan is now 0-5 against Reid and KC. SF is now 3-4 and hasn’t beaten anyone decent this season, and without Christian McCaffrey (IR), Shanahan’s stale scheme has been completely solved with a very flawed Brock Purdy under center.
Shanahan has now started 3-4 in three of the past four seasons. He’ s turned the ship around before, but this season it doesn’t feel like that’s going to happen with this aging, injury-riddled team.
Mike McDaniel, Dolphins
Miami was second in scoring in 2023 but are now dead last with 70 points in six games. The supposed offensive mastermind definitely has been hurt by the loss of Tua Tagovailoa to another concussion, but he’s returning in Week 8. McDaniel won’t have any more excuses if the Fins can’t even hit 20 on the scoreboard.
Jerod Mayo, Patriots
Is there a more boring team in the NFL? They haven’t scored more than 21 points in any game, they are ranked 30th in offense and QB Jacoby Brissett might literally be one of the five worst QBs in the league.
It’s hard to completely throw Mayo in the dumpster since it’s his rookie coaching season, but c’mon, man, you can do better than this.
Dennis Allen, Saints
At some point, you wonder how do guys like this get head coaching gigs? Can I get one? Allen and the Saints have done a complete fade since starting 2-0, and yeah that’s in large part to losing starting quarterback Derek Carr — although this is 0-1-playoff-record Derek Carr we’re talking about, not Drew Brees.
Allen is now 26-51 in his head coaching career and fans are starting to call for him to go. Mmm, I wonder which future NFL team will be stupid enough to give him the keys to the kingdom?
