College Football Trashy Tailgate Week 8: Hook ‘Em Horns!

Brochacho Vargas was a stupid, not stupendous, predictor last weekend with a foul-smelling 0-5 record. Let’s turn this around, shall we?

No. 5 Georgia (5-1) at No. 1 Texas (6-0)

It’s not much of a hot take to take the higher-ranked favorite at home, but that’s what Senor Vargas is doing. The Bulldogs have not looked smooth in most of their victories, and they were dominated by Alabama before making it interesting. Plus, UG coach Kirby Smart has never beaten a top-10 team on the road.

Take Texas to win outright and cover the spread.

Nebraska (5-1) at No. 16 Indiana (6-0)

Despite its decent record, the Cornhuskers still haven’t cracked the top 25, but that should end this weekend. Nebraska did lose to its only ranked opponent, Illinois, but the Hoosiers have yet to play a ranked team. The Huskers have dominated pretty much ever other opponent, including the Sanders’ men of Colorado.

Pick Nebraska to at least cover the sizeable underdog spread.

No. 6 Miami (6-0) at Louisville (4-2)

Senor Vargas is a bit more impressed with Louisville than Miami this season. The Cardinals had one-score losses to Notre Dame and SMU and have won at Virginia and defeated Georgia Tech. The Hurricanes, meanwhile, have mostly defeated smaller schools and eked out wins vs Virginia Tech and Cal.

Take Louisville to at least cover.

USC (3-3) at Maryland (3-3)

The Trojans started the season with an upset win over LSU but now have lost three of their last four games and have been hammered by injuries. Maryland haven’t beaten anyone great, but the Terrapins are top 10 in getting turnovers and the Trojans are making their fourth cross-country trip in less than a month. It highlights one of the main issues with Pac-12 teams joining the Big Ten — the long traveling these schools have to do now.

Go with Maryland to win outright and possibly end USC’s playoff hopes.

South Carolina (3-3) at Oklahoma (3-3)

Both teams have lost to tough ranked teams. The Gamecocks lost to LSU, Tennessee and Alabama. The Sooners lost to Tennesse and Texas. We’re going with OU in this one. They want to get the bad tasted out of their mouths after their 34-3 shellacking by Texas, while SC is back on the road after a grueling two-point loss at Alabama.

Take Oklahoma to win.
