College Football Trashy Tailgate Week 1: These Teams Could Smell Rotten

Look — our prognostications probably aren’t better than yours, but we are still going ahead with our picks for which teams we think will take a big dump on the field in Saturday in Week 1.

No. 7 Notre Dame at No. 20 Texas A&M (-3 on DraftKings)

Yes, on paper there are several reasons why the Aggies will cover. Conner Weigman is back at QB after an injury cut short what had been a brilliant 2023 campaign. Notre Dame is starting two freshmen on the offensive line and their five O-line starters have a combined for six career starts.

So what? The Fighting irish have two ultra-talented playmakers, defensive back Xavier Watts and double-threat quarterback Riley Leonard. Watts won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the nation’s best defensive player after snaring seven interceptions. Leonard passed for 1,102 yards and rushed for 352 yards in seven games with Duke last season.

Moreover, the Aggies haven’t beaten a ranked team since 2022, losing all five games against top-25 teams last season.

No. 19 Miami (-2.5) at Florida

Season expectations are lofty for the Hurricanes. They enter this game ranked 19th and they’ve got a new QB in Cam Ward who threw for nearly 7,000 yards and 48 touchdowns in his two years with Washington State. They’ve added strong pieces on defense.

But the pick here is the Gators. Yes, Ward had big numbers at Wazzu, but he and the Cougs lost seven of their last eight games. Meanwhile, Gator QB QB Graham Mertz going quickly after he completed 73% of his throws for close to 3,000 yards and 20 touchdowns last season.

Mertz also racked up some decent stats in his years at Wisconsin in the Big Ten. He’s got lots of experience facing some of the toughest teams in the nation. Go with Gators in this one.

No. 14 Clemson at No. 1 Georgia (-12)

Break out the TP for the Dawgs. OK, we won’t go so far as to say top-ranked Georgia is going to lose. They haven’t lost a regular season game since November 2020.

But there is a strong chance they don’t cover what could be viewed as a fairly insulting double-digit underdog spread for Clemson coach Dabo Swinney.

Georgia QB Carson Beck won’t have Brock Bowers (56 rec, 714 yards) and Ladd McConkey (30 rec, 478 yards) to throw to this season, and RB transfer Trevor Etienne might not play and backup Roderick is Robinson is injured.

On the flip side, Clemson QB Cade Klubnik has a stable of receiver to throw to and the Tigers have a strong front seven.

Sorry, Dawgs, you don’t get a rollover to start the season.

No. 8 Penn State (-7.5) at West Virginia

Mountaineer fans are understandably confident welcoming the Nittany Lions to Morgantown on Saturday. WVU had the fourth-ranked rushing attack in the nation last season and have a three-headed monster in RBs CJ Donaldson and Jaheim White and dual-threat QB Garrett Greene.

But the Lions have big hopes this season. They’ve won 10 or more games in two straight seasons and are ready to make a serious run at the Big Ten and a spot in the 12-team CFP field this season.

PSU QB Drew Allar passed for 325 yards and 3 TDs against WVU in his first college start, and defensive coordinator Tom Allen has plenty of talent to bog down the Mountaineer run.
