OK, totally no shade toward the ’92 US men’s basketball team. MJ, Magic, Bird, Sir Charles — you kidding? An amazing collection of players that crushed everyone en route to the gold. But the roster Team USA is putting on the court in Paris actually might be the greatest ever.
This year’s squad includes the greatest outside shooter over, the all-time leader in points scored, probably the most dangerous offensive threat ever, and so on. Let’s break it down and you be the judge.
The ‘Dream Team’ of 1992
When USA Basketball opened the floodgates to professional basketball players in the Olympics, that first roster was insane:
Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, Chris Mullin, Christian Laettner, Clyde Drexler, David Robinson, Scottie Pippen. All of them in the Hall of Fame. 23 NBA titles among them. And MJ is the GOAT, according to most.
That team won all eight of its games in 1992 by an average of 44 points. They beat Angola by 68 and Lithuania by 51. Basically, it was ridiculous to pit our top pros against countries with vastly less talent and developmental system than us.
But in the three decades since, basketball has truly exploded into a global sport. The US is 31-1 over their past four Summer Olympics, winning the gold medal each time. The games are getting more competitive, but we still own the hardwood.
2024 — our best team ever?
With all due reverence to ’92, this year’s group might be the greatest. This squad had more players with rings (seven) than the Dream Team (six). This squad probably has more unstoppable players than ’92 had. Check out these credentials:
Stephen Curry: The ‘Splash Brother’ is the all-time leader in three-point goals and has lead the Warriors to four titles despite being an underrated and undersized player out of Davidson. He has probably done more to change overall offensive strategy by dominating the arc than anyone since Jordan.

LeBron James: The greatest hybrid player ever, ‘the King’ is the all-time leader in points scored and has won titles with three separate franchises. He dominates the paint and can splash from outside.
Kevin Durant: The ‘Durantula’ is the greatest scoring threat in NBA history. He can literally score from anywhere on the court, either with his unblockable outside shots or unstoppable drives to the hoop. He joined forces with Curry to win two titles at Golden State.
Jayson Tatum: Arguably the best player in the NBA, JT this past June finally led the Celtics to a title after several years of knocking on the door in the playoffs. His scoring weaponry is much like Durant’s but with a smoother look to it.
Anthony Davis: Arguably the most talented center ever, and nearly unstoppable when he’s healthy and totally psychologically locked in. A 30-20 game can look easy for AD, and joining LeBron in LA was his best career move. Staying healthy has been an issue.

Joel Embiid: If not for the Nuggets’ Nikol Jokic, ‘The Process’ would be the best center in the league. Avoiding injuries has also been problematic for the 76ers’ 7-footer, but when he’s on he can put up a ton of points and own the paint.
Anthony Edwards: ‘Ant’ led the Timberwolves to two victories in Denver against the defending champion Nuggets, the comparisons to Jordan began. Edwards slowed down a bit and eventually lost to the Mavericks in the Western finals, but Ant is going to a huge NBA force for years to come.
The rest of the 2024 team round out an amazing group. The Suns’ Devin Booker, a scoring machine; the Celtics’ Derrick White, a solid scorer who helped lead the Celtics to a title last month; Jrue Holiday, who has helped both the Bucks and Celtics win titles; Bam Adebayo, one of the best defensive big men in the NBA; and Tyrese Haliburton, who’d be a much bigger name if he hadn’t spent his career in small-market Sacramento and Indiana.
