Way back when, the Northeast and the Midwest was a bustling hub of activity. It was a manufacturing powerhouse — making steel, auto parts and mining coal. And then … it all changed. The jobs left, the people left. The Steel Belt became the Rust Belt. But now in the NFL, it’s rust no more!
Buffalo leads the AFC East. Pittsburgh leads the AFC North. Detroit leads the NFC North. And, what’s more, these teams have decent-to-excellent chances to win the Super Bowl in February.
Here are all the teams most likely to come away with the Lombardi, according to the latest SB 59 futures odds from Caesars, and whether they’re ‘Treasure’ (worth betting on) or ‘Trash’ (NOT worth betting on).
Kansas City Chiefs +395, Treasure — Patrick Mahomes threw three TD passes to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night as KC improved to 8-0. We might be witnessing an unfolding of the greatest team — and franchise — in NFL history.
Detroit Lions +495, Treasure — Only four dome teams have won the Super Bowl — the St. Louis Rams (1999), New Orleans Saints (2010), Indianapolis Colts (2017) and LA Rams (2021). The ‘theory’ is that dome teams fold when they have to play in the cold, rain and/or snow, and that their offense slows down on grass.
But that might be a moot point for the Lions. They won in rainy Green Bay on Sunday, and they only have one bitter-weather venue remaining — at Chicago on Dec. 22. If they get the No. 1 seed, they’ll play in their dome throughout the playoffs and maybe in another dome — the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans in Super Bowl 59.
Baltimore Ravens +620, Treasure — Lamar Jackson leads the league in QBR and has 20 TD passes to 2 INTs. He’s also averaging 56 yards rushing per game. But the schedule gets a helluva lot tougher: home vs Bengals this Thursday, then at Steelers, at Chargers and home vs Eagles.
Buffalo Bills +815, Treasure — Josh Allen is fourth in ESPN’s QBR, with 17 touchdown passes and only two interceptions. Buffalo is also tied for the NFL lead with a +11-turnover ratio. Bills vs Chiefs on Nov. 17 could very well decide who’ll be the No. 1 AFC seed in the playoffs.
San Francisco 49ers +990, Trash — 2023 Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey is back in practice and clutch wide receiver Jauan Jennings and kicker Jake Moody are also back. The Niners are 24-4 in meaningful regular-season games on the back end of the past three seasons. Is another run coming?
Philadelphia Eagles +1235, Treasure — Jalen Hurts ranks 7th in QBR and is protecting the ball (only 4 INTs). Philly has started the past three seasons 14-1, 10-1 and now 6-2. After playing the crappy Cowboys, Philly will face three tests — Commanders, Rams and Ravens.
Minnesota Vikings +1925, Trash — The Vikings will have to endure the Sam Darnold roller coaster — lots of TD passes, lots of INTs. He’s at a 17-7 ratio this season. Right now, we can’t see this team surpassing the Lions, 49ers and Eagles in the playoffs. But we’ll keep an eye out …
Green Bay Packers +1975, Trash — Jordan Love has thrown 10 picks and GB is now 0-2 against their main NFC North foes, the Lions and Vikings. This team hasn’t looked great since demolishing the Cowboys in the playoffs last season.
Washington Commanders +2165, Treasure — Rookie Jayden Daniels is third in QBR and 25th in rushing, but the DC team has largely built its 7-2 record against weak and mediocre opposition. They’ve got Steelers and Eagles coming up, though.
Houston Texans +2200, Trash — Five of their six wins were by one score, and they just lost to the Jets. Not promising. But they can get a big statement win if they can beat the Lions on Sunday.
Atlanta Falcons +2465, Treasure — Once again, the Falcons are somewhat flying high with offense but not a whole lot of defense. It always seems to be that way with this team. Kirk Cousins is top 10 in passing yards and has led the team to five wins in six weeks. With an offense like this, they could pull off an upset or two in the playoffs. Or get smoked.
Pittsburgh Steelers +3135, Trash — Russell Wilson is playing well since taking over for Justin Fields, but it’s been against the Jets and Giants. Let’s see how he does against the Commanders and Ravens over the next two weeks.
Cincinnati Bengals +3900, Trash — At 4-5 in the tough AFC North, it’s going to be must-win for Joe Burrow & Co. for at least a few weeks. First, they will have to beat Lamar Jackson and the Ravens in Baltimore.
Los Angeles Chargers +4075, Treasure — Justin Herbert is looking great at QB, LAC is allowing 13 points per game and first-year coach Jim Harbaugh has them exactly where they need to be after the first half of the season. We’ll soon find out how they really measure up, with Bengals, Ravens, Falcons and Chiefs coming up, starting Nov. 17.
Los Angeles Rams +5190, Treasure — The LAR have won three straight games after starting 1-4. Matthew Stafford has two of the most reliable targets in the NFL in Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua. The defense has given up only 55 points in the past three games. It’s hard not to see this team winning the West.
