Still Sad About the Demise of the Pac-12? Don’t Be

It’s still shocking to think the Pac-12 is now the Pac-2. Still shocking to realize that USC, UCLA, Washington and Oregon will be hitting shoulder pads with the likes of Ohio State and Michigan in the Big Ten. Many Pac-12 fans hate it, understandably. But this could be the best chance for a West Coast team to win a national championship for the first time since 2004.

Yes, Washington and Oregon each reached the College Football Playoff championship game, but they were blown out — the Huskies losing to Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan 34-13 in 2024 and the Ducks losing to Ohio State 42-20 in the first CFP final in 2015.

The last time a Pac-12 team won the national title was the 2004-05 season, when Pete Carroll led USC to a 55-19 win over Oklahoma in the BCS championship game.

Since then, no one west of the Mississippi has come close to winning the championship. SEC teams have won 13 titles, ACC teams have won three and Big Ten teams have won two.

The West’s best chance

Let’s be clear — the West’s best will have a much better chance of regaining national glory by getting into the mix with the second-most powerful conference in the nation, the Big Ten (SEC is No. 1).

USC, UCLA, Washington and Oregon can now recruit players with the opportunity to be compete against Big Ten heavyweights Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin. No more being stuck out in the lonely West.
