We are now in Week 4 of the college football season, and your snarky prognosticator Brochacho Vargas is hoping for an uptick after going 1-9 the past two weekends.
Georgia Tech (+11) at No. 19 Louisville (-11)
The No. 19 Cardinals have looked great this season — uh, against Austin Peay and Jacksonville State. Georgia Tech, meanwhile, upset Florida State and lost by three at Syracuse. The Yellow Jackets are much more battle tested, obviously.
Under second-year coach Brent Key, GT is 11-3 as an underdog against the spread and 8-5 straight up. The Jackets beat the +7-point spread against Louisville last season, losing by one point.
Go with GT to beat the spread and maybe even win outright.
No. 13 Kansas State (-6.5) at BYU (+6.5)
BYU has won four of its past five games at home against Top 25 teams (K-State is 13th), and Cougar QB Jake Retzlaff will be able to challenge the Wildcat secondary with Chase Roberts going deep. BYU also has 19 tackles for losses, which could put pressure on first-year KSU QB Avery Johnson to make big passes with his arm.
Our pick? BYU to win outright.
No. 11 USC (-5) at No. 18 Michigan (+5)
OK, Senor Vargas is reversing himself a bit, just out of gut instinct. On paper, the Trojans should handle the Wolverines in the Big House. Michigan is changing its starting quarterback to Alex Orji, who has attempted only seven passes in three seasons, and the Trojans earlier this season stunned LSU in Las Vegas. But just for the heck of it, we are going with Michigan’s running attack — much better than LSU’s — to at least keep the game close.
Pick Michigan to at least cover.
No. 24 Illinois (+8) at No. 22 Nebraska (-8) on Friday
The Cornhuskers have lost 12 straight games against ranked opponents. Returning Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer has completed nearly 70% of his passes with 647 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions in leading the team’s 3-0 start, which included a victory over No. 19 Kansas in Lawrence.
Go with the Illini to at least cover.
No. 12 Utah (+2) at No. 14 Oklahoma State (-2.5)
Utes QB Cam Rising returns after missing a week and could find holes in the shaky Cowboys’ defense. Utah’s aggressive defense could also put enough monkey wrenches in the OSU offense to put them in line for an upset.
Take the Utes in an upset.
