The debate between Edward and Jacob is like comparing Messi to Ronaldo or chocolate to vanilla ice cream. There are two sides, each with its own pros and cons.
Edward: Devotion and Unconditional Love
Edward is deeply devoted to Bella. He would do anything for her, even sacrificing his own life. His love for her is unwavering, as seen in “New Moon” when he leaves her to protect her, despite his own pain. Edward’s primary concern is Bella’s happiness and safety, making her his top priority. Throughout the series, his actions consistently demonstrate his deep commitment, no matter how indecisive or reckless Bella can be.
Stalking, Leaving, and Non-Human Nature
However, Edward’s actions can be problematic. His departure in “New Moon” sends Bella into a deep depression, during which Jacob steps in to support her. Edward’s habit of watching Bella sleep before they even knew each other well is undeniably creepy. It’s hard to understand why Bella found this behavior romantic. Additionally, Edward’s non-human nature poses a constant danger, as he and his family could easily harm Bella at any moment.
Jacob: Genuine Kindness and Humanity
Jacob is genuinely kind and always there for Bella when she needs him. His flirtatious nature in the first movie is endearing, and his support during Bella’s tough times in “New Moon” is commendable. He even builds her a motorcycle, demonstrating his willingness to go the extra mile for her. Unlike Edward, Jacob is human most of the time, making him a safer option for Bella.
Rage, Inconsideration, and Clothing Issues
Jacob’s short temper is a significant drawback. He can transform into a werewolf at the slightest provocation, which can lead to disastrous consequences. His impulsive behavior is evident when he kisses Bella without her consent in the third movie, leading to her breaking her fist in anger. Jacob’s tendency to go shirtless is another oddity, as is his romantic interest in Bella’s daughter, which many find disturbing.
So, Who’s Better?
The answer is a matter of personal preference. Some people prefer Edward’s fantasy and devotion, while others favor Jacob’s kindness and warmth. Bella ultimately chose Edward, but many would choose Jacob. The audience remains divided due to the contrasting qualities of both characters. The saga would have been less complicated if Bella had made her choice more decisively.
